I thought these older beginning collections might be old dated and boring, but I was wrong! Stan Lee is a brilliant writer and I've absolutely enjoyed these omnibus editions more than I would've guessed! These Stan Lee scripted foundations of the marvel universe may have been the best written of any comics that followed in some ways, with Stan constantly inventing and innovating.
Please, Marvel release full runs of all the classic series in omnibus form, they are fantastic.
My only concern with Marvel Omnibus editions is the binding, although the main series like Iron Man, Spider Man, Hulk and FF seem strong and the glue holds, others like Tomb of Dracula have bindings coming unglued. I am constantly checking the binding and the Secret Wars II has some bits also coming loose. If Marvel gets the binding quality up these are amazing books to own and I love them and hope for a large collection of runs with these. Highly recommended to comics/ Marvel lovahz

This book gets 4 stars, but Marvel gets 2 stars for releasing another collection that may not continue.
Here is yet another collection of the first issues of Iron Man by Marvel Comics. If you've seen the MARVEL MASTERWORKS Iron Man series, then you've already had a taste of what's in here.
This contains the first appearance of Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #39, but re-colored today, very generically, not matching the coloring of the original issues. So it's not really an exact reproduction, but it's still pretty good.
It is very nice to see so many issues represented in such a lush volume, but as I said before, they did this with the Marvel Masterworks series and then discontinued it, well in fact, they re-released the SAME TWO volumes about 5 years after the initial release. They did this with the Marvel Essential Iron Man as well; printed two volumes, then reprinted the same two and discontinued the series.
Are we to get the same treatment with this new Omnibus series? Although this covers a good 45 issues of Iron Man's earliest exploits, there is much, much more to read about, and I hope Marvel will no drop the ball once again.
Marvel's marketing choices aside, this is a VERY nice intro to Iron Man, for new and old fans alike. This effectively doubles the amount of full-color reprints of Tales of Suspense, so even Masterworks owners may want to get this.

I'm in my mid 20s so I obviously never got to read these stories as they came out. I love the stories marvel has been producing in recent years but have a great interest in reading the earlier issues.
Marvel Omnibus is definately the way to go. This Iron Man book looks beautiful, the colors are vibrant and the pages are much larger than your average comic, giving you an awesome reading experience.
Yes, even with the amazon discounted price, 62.99 is a hefty price to pay for a book. However, the content is excellent, much more fun to read than I originally would've thought, and it's way cheaper than buying the previously released marvel masterworks which I believe retail for $50 a piece and only give you maybe a 1/3 of what's in this massive book.
I will definately be getting Marvel Omnibus' (or is it Omnibi, I dunno) of all my favorite marvel characters if they keep producing them at this quality.

I have read many Iron Man comics over the years, mostly from the '70s and '80s. But I had never read the very earliest Iron Man stories, so with the release of the Iron Man movie, I decided to finally do so. This huge book reprints the first 40something Iron Man comics from Tales of Suspense #39 - 83. The earliest stories here are a bit gimmicky, with most issues featuring Iron Man pulling out some new device that just happens to be the perfect thing to defeat the villain with (and most of those early villains are pretty lame). But the series started to improve when Stan Lee took over the complete scripting duties, instead of just providing the plots. The series steadliy improved and reached a high point with Tales of Suspense #69 - 71 (the epic first battle with Titanium Man). From that point on, the series was about as good as anything else Marvel Comics was publishing. This book is a bit pricey, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than tracking down and buying the original comic books.

When Marvel introduced the Omnibus series of reprint collections, I had my fingers crossed that they'd eventually get to Iron Man. Fortunately the success of the Iron Man movie made the Armored Avenger a hot property, so I got my wish. These phone book-sized collections of classic Silver Age comics are perfect for those of us who want to read the original material but can't afford the vintage back issues. Volume 1 of the Iron Man Omnibus series collects the initial issues of Iron Man's Tales of Suspense run, collecting (the Iron Man halves of) issues 39-83 plus the Iron Man/Sub-Mariner crossover story from Tales to Astonish #82. The Omnibus also includes the original covers, letters pages (a real treat) and some bonus material, all in gloriously restored color and on high quality paper stock.
The stories collected here were written by Stan Lee, and include the introduction and origin of Iron Man, his armor's evolution from grey to gold to the iconic red and yellow armor that's still (more or less) intact today. In this run we get appearances by the X-Men and Captain America, a terrific Sub-Mariner crossover, new villains like the Titanium Man and the Mandarin, and popular supporting characters Happy Hogan and Pepper Potts. All of which are presented in Stan Lee's unforgettable storytelling style. Dated and a little silly at times, but pure magic.
The artwork is just as legendary. Jack Kirby, Don Heck and Gene Colan all provide artwork for these early Iron Man tales, and all did amazing jobs. Kirby and Heck developed the character, and Colan solidified the Iron Man look and style. This is just tremendous stuff to look at, especially with such brilliant re-coloring and on such high-quality paper.
Kudos to Marvel for a well put-together collection of vintage Iron Man issues. The Iron Man Omnibus, Vol. 2 just came out, and it is just as spectacular. I only hope they continue this series on through the 70's and 80's material, as there are so many great stories there that would be great in this format.
